We haven't been going to the Dog over the past few months because the atmosphere was glum and the staff just as glum. We heard about the new owner George and decided to try it out. What a FABULOUS DIFFERENCE. The atmosphere was happy again, the staff were back to being bright and cheerfull. We made a reservation for Mother's Day and not only had great food but had an amazing experience. Every lady being treated to a glass of champagne (with a strawberry) and having George escort a senior up the stairs. This certainly would not have happened with the previous owner. If you haven't been to the Dog in a while give it another chance, I am sure you won't be disappointed.
I'm not sure what spurned the 2 horrible reviews (personal issues?), but my family and I just ate at "The Dog" tonight and it was great as usual. It's a bit odd that the 2 reviews seem to have similar orders and both gave the restaurant the same score. Anyway, even with the change in ownership, the staff is still the same friendly staff who greet you at the door and thank you on your way out. The pastas were cooked perfectly, the poached salmon was moist and full of flavour, and the blackened catfish was devoured by my brother. Ignore the negative reviews, true foodies would appreciate this great establishment.
We stopped going to The Dog a year or so ago when it got all preachy about "healthy lifestyle" It's a pub for god sake, if I want that I will go to a spa or gym. We heard there was a new owner so we gave it another try. It was good to see Brian was back managing the place. The menu have been cut down, but as yet there was not much differant stuff on it. The same old bar flys are hanging out around the the front door smoking. (come on Brian, give them somewhere else to smoke) It would be nice if diners didn't have to push thier way through the bar to get to the diningroom. The food was ok. If I go back, I will avoid Thursday night. To noisy for dining.
We USED to be regulars at The Dog for many years. Being from the neighbourhood it was a great place to go, have a few pints and some appies. We always ran into someone that we knew and have re-opened old friendships with people we have not seen in many years...As I said, we USED to be regulars...not sure what happened a little over a year ago..the menu changed...I am all for changes and Vegetarian...but not at the expense of "pub food"...why not just add a vegan menu and keep the old one? You used to see the owner around all the time..he would sit and chat with the patrons, have a pint every now and then...not anymore, hardly ever saw him...staff started changing...gone were the favorites that really did "know everyone's name" ...gone was the live music, gone was the fun... We have not been back to the Pub since the new owners have taken over...Although I must say that I have noticed that the streets around the Pub are once again becoming lined with cars and the sign outside is being used for more than just wishing the neighbourhood residents happy birthday. I am taking this as a sign of good things to come! I have been hearing positive things, people are saying it is going back to the true neighbourhood pub that it once was....I look forward to visiting the first chance i get....If all goes well i will be a regular once again!!!
My husband and I discovered the Black Dog Pub a couple of years ago and developed a great affinity for this pub, its terrific food and wonderful service and atmosphere. We dine out frequently and love to try new places, however we always come back to the Black Dog. When we heard that the pub had new ownership, we were eager to meet the new owner (as we had never met the previous owner) and see what changes he might be contemplating. The staff all seemed enthusiastic about the new owner and we can see why. George is an experienced operator of pubs and restaurants, and is obviously passionate about the business. He is charismatic and charming and shows a real interest in his customers. The only changes we have noticed are positive - the food continues to be great, portions appear to be larger, and prices are a little lower. The specials are to die for and the wine selection is outstanding! Despite the doom and gloom that we hear about the economy right now, the Black Dog appears to be thriving! Congratulations George, we look forward to many years at the Black Dog!
