Saskatchewan: the kingdom of lakes and forests
What do Australia, Kazakhstan and Saskatchewan have in common? No, it is not the many syllables contained in their names — these are the three largest producers of uranium in the world. Amazing, isn't it?
Uranium is not, however, what comes to mind when we think of this Canadian province. Here, nature prevails as 75 per cent of the province is covered with forests — half of which is used in the foresting industry. Many people associate Saskatchewan with vast, endless fields, but think again! We find here not less than 100,000 rivers, lakes and streams, about 40 provincial parks and two national parks.
All this for a province populated by just over one million people. And the population is not homogeneous; strolling about Saskatchewan, you can hear German, French, Ukrainian and the Cree language. It is in Saskatoon — and not in the capital Regina — that we find most of the province’s inhabitants (about a quarter of the population).
Festivals abound in major centres: the Fringe, the Festival of Worlds of Moosejaw, the Regina Folk Festival and the Midsummer Arts Festival in Fort Qu'Appelle. And what epic Canadian sports team yielded the most merchandise-based revenue after the HC (Montreal Canadiens) and the Maple Leafs? The Roughriders!
