In Montreal’s Verdun borough, there are many places to eat and drink, just like everywhere else in this world-class city, but not many of them are open late. That’s why owner Jean François Pigeon decided to open Balconville in June 2014. He wanted to address a need in the neighbourhood where he has lived for most of his life.
It’s a small establishment with a terrace in the back and an open kitchen in the front. People walking by can look through the window and see the cook and bartender hard at work. The name, Balconville, is a direct reference to the neighbourhood.
“When you walk down the avenues and the smaller streets, there are always people chilling on their balconies and talking to one another from across the street drinking their beers,” says Pigeon. “When you’re on the terrace here, there are balconies all around, so it’s like instead of chilling on your balcony, come chill on ours!”
From the same team that runs Wellington comes Balconville, a neighbourhood pub offering gourmet pub-style fare, with beer, cocktails, wine and... a beautiful terrace! We love the 1855 Black Angus steak burger with dark beer onion compote, aged cheddar and home-smoked bacon. Mmmmmm!
Balconville bills itself as a gourmet pub, and it has the clientele to fit with that description. Here, you can enjoy a warm atmosphere, good beer and good food. Burgers, grilled fish tacos, pork croquettes and much more. How many restaurants offer a tarte tatin (an upside-down tart) worthy of this name? Not many, but Balconville is one of them! On the menu for the Panache event: Spicy hot chocolate with maple whiskey (the latter only for older guests) and the "Sortilège du balcon" (charm of the balcony) shooter.
A newcomer to our beautiful promenade, Balconville charms me with its warm atmosphere. This pub serves some beautifully executed dishes – such as burgers, chicken wings, drumsticks and fish tacos – but what moves me the most is its cozy and welcoming atmosphere and an impressive cocktail and wine list, including many privately imported wines. They offer a nice selection of non-alcoholic drinks of all types, to the delight of women who are pregnant or nursing.
