Very enjoyable. However the portions are FAR too large for the average Canadian. Doggy bags (containers) are available but the patron has to fill them - that's a first ! I would suggest that the size of the portions and the pice should be reviewed. Had we received a smaller portion at a lower price we would have stayed for coffee and desert.
The best dining experience in the Ottawa Valley, nestled in picturesque and historic Burnstown. We have dined here ever since it opened, and have yet to be dissappointed! Every dish is outstanding, made with fresh flavourable ingrediants.... satisfying proportions, well balanced, and done to perfection. Both the appetizers and desserts compliment any entree on the menu. The quaint atmosphere and hometown service only add to the culinary pleasure. This is what food should taste like, and this is what makes dining out such a treat. The Blackbird Cafe is a complete package!
The only weak item is any main course with pastry e.g. chicken pot pie and that is only because it is heated in a microwave which makes the crust flabby and tough at the same time. Everything else is delicious. Unlike the previous reviewer, I have never experienced rudeness. They have one cook - I don't know how the reviewer could have expected 8 people to get served at the same time if everyone ordered something different. We make frequent trips from Ottawa to have lunch at this establishment.
This place is a hidden gem. My fiancé and I stopped in for a coffee, but were pursuaded by the server and the menu to share a club sandwich. They offer a half a sandwich and soup combo for two, so we had that. The quality of the ingredients blew us away! I consider myself to be quite a "foodie" (others have called me a food snob!), so I am not easily impressed. However, this café impressed me. The club sandwich had generous slices of chicken breast meat, crisp bacon, sprouts and tomatoes. It was the best club I've had in...well, I don't remember having an equal in another restaurant, ever, to be honest. No place in Ottawa that I've aware of can touch the food here. Also, the coffee was good and the cake. Oh my! Can I just say that I would get in my car and drive from Toronto for that cake! It was divine. I don't usually enjoy lemony desserts, but this was the kind of cake I remember from my childhood. A generous piece served with real whip cream. We shared a slice, and we both scraped the plate to get every last crumb and licked our forks clean!! Yes, it was that good. The only criticism I could come up with was that the chicken noodle soup was on the salty side. Other than that, the entire experience was wonderful. Cannot wait to return!
I enjoyed a delicious smoked salmon special and salad with homemade dressing. This was the third time I have eaten at the cafe and each time I have found the quality of the food to be excellent. The service was attentive and the atmosphere friendly. The owners have managed to tastefully decorate the space while preserving the atmosphere of an old country store in a picturesque small town.
