    The Role of the Landscaper

Edibella recently landscaped our neighbours' yard and in doing so, planted three Serbian spruce trees less than ten feet apart on our south property boundary. In speaking to the landscaper in charge, we learned that the trees were expected to grow to a height of 50 or 60 feet. Our own research confirmed this fact, and that each tree eventually becomes 25 feet wide. I pointed out that the trees would shortly be overcrowded and that they would cast our vegetable garden into shade. The landscaper's response was unsympathetic. "My clients don't want to see your house", he replied. It should be noted that we live in a newly developed strata where the houses are relatively close together and it did occur to me that the locale did not make masking one's neighbour's house easy, but apparently Edibella was willing to try. At the same time they planted three very large maples in the same constricted area which sits between two high fences or walls erected by our neighbours for reasons of privacy, we presume. Aside from the fact that we are feeling demonstratively unloved, we are asking ourselves the questions, "Given the desire for tidy profits, do landscape companies have an obligation to advise their clients about the suitability of large trees in a small, shared urban setting?" And further, "Does the modern milieu of self-absorption admit any consideration of one's neighbours' needs?" Obviously not in this particular case, but we are contemplating the bigger picture where we suggest these issues are worth thinking about when selecting a company to landscape your yard.

The role of the landscaper is to meet their clients needs, create a beautiful landscape and do it within the specified budget. All of which I did on the job you chastise me for. My clients were thrilled with the work we did on that site, and the trees we planted there as per a specific request of my clients that we block the upper story windows of your house from the view of their deck. Which the trees did very well and my clients are happy because we gave them a beautiful landscape within their budget. I am sorry that the trees block some of your light but that is definitly one of the challenges of living in the city. Urban densification is what keeps our wild spaces wild and our farm land farms.
