One rainy night at Blackbox Studios, owner Steve McGonigle was behind the console mixing a song with local group, The Uncas. The excesses of the downpour, unfortunately found their way through the foundation and it wasn’t long before 90 per cent of the basement studio was flooded. Production was delayed while Steve rescued any equipment lying on the floor. After the skirmish to save everything, the irony of the situation didn’t go unnoticed by Steve and the group, considering they were working on a piece called “The Flood.”
While Steve admits three more floods had taken place at Blackbox before the building owners refurbished the structure with weeping tiles, those events have been the only drawbacks since the studio first opened its doors in 2000. He’s had plenty of groups come in from local indies to acts including SNFU and performers signed to such major labels as Warner Music Canada and Universal. More recently, he’s laid tracks down for a Filipino upstart named Darren Espanto, who was first runner-up in that nation’s version of The Voice.
