Read on to find out what the main causes of under-eye bags are and what you can do to diminish their puffy appearance.
Aging: The effect of aging weakens the skin. When this happens, fragile lymph vessels can leak and cause an accumulation of fluid resulting in the formation of pockets under the eyes. Under-eye skin is five times thinner and more fragile than anywhere elsewhere on the body.
Fatty deposits: Fatty deposits from the eyeball, which normally help to lubricate the eye, can build-up in the lower eyelid causing inflammation.
Tears: Crying, allergies or any other condition causing tears and runny eyes can block lymph vessels and swell the lower eyelids.
Poor lifestyle habits: Fatigue, alcohol, tobacco, poor diet and stress all increase the risk of developing under-eye bags. These factors can lead to inflammation and disrupt lymphatic vessels.
Heredity: Sometimes you’re born with the gene and will be susceptible to bags and pockets even when you’re young and healthy.
Eye surgery, known as blepharoplasty, is an operation to remove the excess fatty deposits that cause pockets. As with any cosmetic surgery, results are not 100 per cent guaranteed and as you continue to age, your pockets may also re-emerge over time.
