4 simple tips for cleaning your lamps and light fixtures

Light fixtures seem to be a dirt magnet. Regularly cleaning your lighting fixtures is an important part of home maintenance, and can keep your house from looking darker and less clean. Because they are often clear or light-coloured and placed in prominent places, it's easy to notice the dirt and dust that builds up on them.

1. Turn off the electricity

You want to make sure to exercise safety precautions when cleaning your lights. They have electricity running through them and turning off the light switch isn't enough to make sure that you won't get a shock. Head to your fuse box and flip the switch that controls that light or unplug the feature to make sure there's no danger before you begin.

2. Use a clean cloth

If you're just trying to remove a light layer of dust and debris, it's best to keep it simple and use a clean, damp cloth to wipe down the exterior of the lamp. Heavy-duty cleaning solutions can be too abrasive to use on certain surfaces, so stick with water to keep the surfaces looking their best.

3. Devote more time to a serious cleaning

About once a year, it's a good idea to do a serious cleaning of the light fixture to get all the dust and dirt that hides away on the inside of the fixture. Unscrew the exterior glass and rinse it with water and a clean towel in the sink until all the dust is removed from both sides. Use a gentle cleaning solvent if necessary, but be careful not to chip or break the glass.

4. Wear goggles

When dusting overhead, it's important to wear goggles or glasses so that you don't get any dust or debris in your eyes, especially if you're using a feather duster. The dust can fall down and scratch or irritate your eyes, so be sure to take caution when doing so. A mask can also be helpful, so you don't inhale all that dust.

Cleaning your lamps and light fixtures is an important part of your yearly cleaning routines. Follow these tips and remember to be careful when doing your deep cleaning of lamps and light fixtures throughout your home.
