This membership-based spot in East Van is an amazing space that’s fun for both parents and kids. The café serves tea, coffee and delicious and healthy foods like paninis, salads and gluten-free baked goods. The play space is designed for kids up to about kindergarten age and is all about independent, unstructured and imaginative play. You won’t find any batteries, flashing lights or horrible noises here!
This family-friendly restaurant is a classic in Vancouver with locations in Kitsilano and on Main Street. Chefs here source all of their food locally and on certain nights of the week kids can make their own pizza. I also love it because the menu’s not just chicken strips and fries; you can actually order vegetables as an appetizer and that way the little ones eat their veggies before the main meal arrives! There’s also a play space with a mock kitchen where children can amuse themselves while the grownups are eating.
I know what you’re thinking — Tap and Barrel might be a beer- and wine-focused restaurant but it’s also a great place to bring the kids. The Olympic Village location has a dedicated kids menu and a scenic patio overlooking the water, which means young ones can run around on the plaza while parents are eating. Servers are very open to having kids there so if you want to go out and have a beer on a patio with your partner, everybody will be welcome and have fun.
You can pair sweet treats with story time at this kid-friendly bakery on Main Street. The Last Crumb hosts a special reading hour for pre-school aged kids every Tuesday morning – it’s definitely an entertaining thing to do with little ones. The baked goods, lunches and brunches here are also really tasty.
This old-fashioned greasy spoon in Langley has been around since the 1940s. It’s a family-friendly, welcoming spot and has even been featured on the Food Network’s You Gotta Eat Here. The menu features fresh, made-to-order comfort foods and your best bet is definitely the classic diner-style breakfasts. The portion sizes are very big so everyone will be full for the whole day after a meal here.
In a neighbourhood without many family-friendly things around, Kokopelli has been a popular destination for Dunbar area parents since 2006. There’s a really great on-site play area for children to enjoy and the all-female staff here are extremely welcoming. If you’re hungry, the mac and cheese (available in both child and adult portions) is delicious!
