Burgers go upscale in the hypercompetitive and demanding Financial District. People who move financial mountains won’t settle for just any backwater burger. These great downtown burger joints use premium ingredients and extraordinary imagination.
Reality show junkies love this as-seen-on-TV burger joint, owned by the famed Wahlberg bothers (Mark, Donnie and Paul). Located inside the SoHo Met hotel, the Hollywood family-owned burger joint serves up beef, seafood and turkey burgers topped with classic and creative ingredients. Why not play favourites and pick a burger based on your preferred brother? Mark’s choice is the Thanksgiving burger; a fresh ground turkey patty topped with stuffing, cranberry sauce and roasted butternut squash. Donnie’s fave is the barbecue bacon burger with a jalapeno kick, while Paul prefers the classic beef patty topped with his signature Wahl sauce.
They obviously believe that the business-savvy clientele deserves a better burger. GBC uses only Canadian-raised beef, aged for at least a month, with toppings prepared in-house. They’ve got oodles of burger choices for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike, including lamb, fish and spicy Cajun. You can also try one of their signature burgers with pre-set toppings.
A haute cuisine restaurant is usually the last place you’d expect to find an amazing burger but this Financial District hot spot serves two great ones. You can opt for their 8 oz Grass Fed Burger (brie de meaux, grilled porcini mushrooms) or go urban with their 5 oz Street Burger (pea meal bacon, smoked Gouda, spiced onion jam, pickles and mustard aioli). Both are fabulous, so there really is no wrong choice.
Walk a block east of Yonge on King and prepare to meet your burger maker. Ease in gently with one of the five different burgers on the Classics menu or head directly to the Signature menu for the truly mind-bending choices. They combine toppings like gorgonzola cheese, cilantro-feta spread, rosemary garlic mayo, caramelized onions, coleslaw and sautéed mushrooms (not all on the same burger!) with 6 oz patties made fresh daily from Ontario beef.
Wellington Street never had it so good since this burger joint arrived in the neighbourhood. There’s no fooling around here, just a staggering selection of burgers designed for serious appetites. The burgers have kitschy names, such as Beer Goggles, Barking At My Cow, Hunka Hunka, Grills Gone Wild, Love Goat and Notorious P.I.G. There’s even a burger on the menu you can pay for with Canadian Tire money — the Crappy Tire burger.
Any resto under the Oliver & Bonacini banner is always a good thing but when you add burgers to the mix, it gets even better. Monday’s special is a jalapeño turkey burger (brioche bun with Boston lettuce, avocado and vegetable chips). If you can’t make it on Monday, they’ve got a wickedly good lamb burger all of the time.
