If you would like to treat Mom to a day she'll never forget, chose an activity-based Mother's Day adventure, rather than just the traditional brunch or dinner (or do both!). These fun activities all take place the weekend of Mother's day 2016, and offer a family-friendly experience Mom will love.
The Edmonton-area charity Basically Babies holds their annual Mother’s Day Brunch event the day prior to Mother’s Day, so you can celebrate early with your mom while supporting a good cause. The “tulips & tabletops” brunch takes place May 7, 2016, at the Agora Community Centre in Sherwood Park. The event includes a buffet brunch, silent auction and special guest speakers. All funds raised go to support Basically Babies, a group that provides newborns in need with all the basics of a baby wardrobe.
If Mom is a big fan of flowers and nature, she’ll adore the Prairie Gardens’ Mother’s Day Blossom Garden party, which takes place Sunday, May 8. Reservations are required for brunch, with seatings available at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. There will be hot and cold buffet items, including buttermilk pancakes, breakfast sausage, balsamic pesto chicken and roast beef. Plus, there are plenty of free family-friendly events throughout the day, including a live jazz band, petting zoo, puppet shows, face-painting, train rides, a photo booth and a preview of spring garden plants.
This bi-annual craft fair returns this month, from May 5 to 9, 2016. Take Mom shopping for locally produced goods, or pick out a special gift for her before the big day. The Bison vendors dish out everything from artisanal doughnuts to handmade catnip toys. There’s lots of apparel for sale, from designers like Malorie Urbanovitch, Offal Goods and Salgado Fenwick, not to mention jewellery, woodwork, prints, paper products, leather goods and bath and beauty items. If Mom loves craft sales or locally produced, unique goods, she’ll heart the Bison.
There are multiple exhibitions to view on Mother’s Day, including two new ones that open at the end of April. May 8 is also the last day to view the exhibition The Blur in Between, featuring multiple artists, designers and a writer. And, the art gallery’s restaurant, Zinc, offers brunch on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., so you can treat Mom to a spectacular meal before or after browsing the exhibits.
The annual Mother’s Day Walk, Run and Ride event takes place in Hawrelak Park on Sunday, May 8, 2016. Participants can choose to ride 2.5 km., run 10 km or walk/run 5 km. Pair up with Mom or the whole family for a fun, active Mother’s Day event. The warmup starts at 8:45 a.m. and awards are at 11 a.m., so you’ll have plenty of time to reward yourself with brunch afterwards, if you like! Proceeds go to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.
This Mother’s Day, the Edmonton Valley Zoo will pamper both mama animals and human moms! The animal moms living at the zoo will get special treatments throughout the afternoon, while human moms will receive free mini-massages. There will also be plenty of family-fun events, including face painting, magic shows, planting activities, live music, special encounters with the animals and more. The activities run from 12 p.m. till 4 p.m., and regular summer rates apply for admission.
Calling all sleuths: Check out the International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes this Mother’s Day. This travelling exhibit is interactive and fun – plus, Edmonton is the only Canadian stop on its tour! There will also be a Sherlock Holmes 2D movie showing in the IMAX theatre at 5:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 8, 2016, so you can have a full day of mystery-solving fun! There’s also plenty of cool permanent exhibits to check out while you’re there.
Mayfield Dinner Theatre, located inside the Doubletree by Hilton hotel, offers a delightful Sunday brunch show. On Mother’s Day 2016, the performance will be the iconic musical Hair. The musical takes place in New York in the age of Aquarius, and tells the story of a group of young friends struggling with the realities of the Vietnam War. While you watch the plot unfold, enjoy a buffet of salads, bruschetta chicken, southwest scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, penne, French toast, eggs Benedict, and more. Plus, the dessert selection is crazy, with everything from lemon shortcake to gluten-free black forest torte.
