People often focus on dining in downtown Edmonton or close to the city’s busier districts, like Whyte Avenue and 124 Street. However, there are plenty of great restaurants farther south. If you work or live on the south side, you don’t need to venture very far to devour a fantastic lunch at these spots.
One of the latest restaurants to open on the south side, The Workshop Eatery is located inside the Mosaic Centre on 91 Street. It’s the creation of Chef Paul Shufelt, formerly the executive chef for the Century Hospitality Group. The restaurant, which is open for lunch, dinner and brunch, focuses on using local ingredients, such as bread from Bon Ton Bakery and Irvings Farm Fresh bacon. This is a lunch best saved for when you have time to truly savour every bite of your meal, whether you go for the Riverbend Gardens beet salad or the organic Chinook salmon.
There are a few spots to sit and eat your fried chicken inside Coco Chicken but most people get their lunch to go. Their lunch special is a very reasonable $7.99 for two pieces of crispy chicken with rice and Caesar salad. The fried chicken is the real star here though. Whether you go for two, three, four or five pieces of epic, crunchy chicken, you’ll be content. They also serve up chicken and waffles, chicken strips with fries or combo packs that mix an order of crispy chicken with some sweet and hot chicken.
This Chinese restaurant, located in a strip mall in the southside industrial area, isn’t much to look at from the outside. But, once you start eating, you’ll forgive the somewhat outdated décor. The service is exceptional, and the food is equally excellent. They are one of the few Chinese places that have some gluten-free dishes and gluten-free soy sauce. Plus, there is plenty of seating, so it’s easy to get a table for a group. They also have multiple lunch specials, for as cheap as $6.75.
A tiny Vietnamese restaurant hidden amongst other shops in Summerside, Mini Mango is an ideal place to get lunch to go or stay (there are several tables inside). They make everything fresh, and are happy to cater to dietary preferences or allergies. Their menu is labelled to let guests know which items can be made gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, spicy or extra spicy (and which dishes contain nuts). Their Thai green curry is always a good choice, as are the vermicelli noodle bowls. They are known for their banh mi Vietnamese subs, such as the pork meatball or lemongrass tofu sandwiches.
This small shop is tucked in among some newer businesses on 91 Street, just off of Ellerslie Road. The menu includes items like chicken kebabs, tandoori chicken legs, naan bread, goat biryani, butter chicken and tandoori chicken tikka. It’s a great spot to grab a lunch to go – or some marinated meats to cook up at home.
This Indian restaurant, located just off of Ellerslie Road on 91 Street, serves up a tasty lunch buffet for a reasonable price. They also have a menu filled with delicious choices, such as mango curry chicken, chicken tikka masala and chana masala. The restaurant’s décor makes it a nice spot to sit and enjoy a lunch with friends or coworkers, but they also offer takeout, if you wish to take it back to the office. Be sure to try their exquisite coconut rice – it pairs wonderfully with any of the curries and naan breads.
Edmonton’s oldest sushi restaurant also has a location in South Edmonton Common, making it the perfect spot to stop for sashimi after a long day of shopping. The restaurant is huge, so there is hardly ever a wait for a table, and you can also sit at the bar and watch the chefs work their magic. There are five different bento box options available at lunch, as well as a full menu. The veggie bento box clocks in at only $12, for veggie sushi, tempura, barbecued vegetables, salad and rice.
