There’s nothing quite as satisfying, or as comforting, as good barbecue. Whether it’s pulled pork, smoked ribs, barbecue brisket, fried chicken, or po’ boy style sandwiches, there’s something mouth watering just thinking about barbecue. In the cold of winter or heat of summer, Edmonton has delicious barbecue restaurants to kill your craving.
A community centred restaurant with a southern charm, Meat is sister to The Next Act pub, just off Edmonton’s historic Whyte Avenue. They smoke all their delectable offerings in house daily from pulled pork and brisket to smoked chicken, Andouille sausage and daily meat specials. They have spectacular side dishes to complement their meats, such as boursin mac and cheese, Brussels sprouts, green beans, an awesome house salad and garlic fries. Added bonus: They make their own in house barbecue sauces (my favourite is the cherry) and have an unparalleled bourbon list.
A Whyte Avenue landmark, Dadeo specializes in Cajun style cuisine and barbecue: Jambalaya, ribs and blackened catfish. Their po’ boys are the bomb, such as the Bayou burger, Philly cheese steak, blackened chicken and crab cake, to name a few. Dadeo has a cool, retro diner décor and is an adult-only establishment offering Alley Kat beer on tap and southern style cocktails.
An award-winning franchise out of British Columbia, Memphis Blues offers decent and satisfying southern style barbecue that is smoked in-house. Menu selections range from the traditional brisket and cornbread to wings and rib ends to catfish and jambalaya. The Sherwood Park location is considered the best in the Edmonton area, but there are also locations in North and South Edmonton.
Located on 124 Street, Smokehouse BBQ is an award-winning applewood smokehouse restaurant and caterer known for its ribs and Southern classics. Popular dishes include biscuits and gravy, fried chicken and waffles, mac and cheese and cornbread. Smokehouse BBQ is also popular for their roast pork wrapped in bacon, a.k.a. the bacon bomb.
A cafeteria-style barbecue joint, Fired Up is known for providing good barbecue in generous portions for a good price. Popular for their juicy brisket, pulled pork, barbecue chicken and dill potato salad, Fired Up offers a low key, no fuss barbecue experience at an affordable price.
Sloppy Hog’s Roed Hus smokes their meat using four different woods and smokes it low and slow with a spicy in-house rub and homemade barbecue sauces. Serving up Southern mainstays like brisket, pulled pork, BBQ chicken and ribs, along with traditional sides, such as cornbread, sweet potato fries, collard greens, brown beans and corn on the cob, Sloppy Hog’s has a massive, varied menu. Eclectic menu items include alligator and kangaroo sausage.
A kitschy cafeteria-style barbecue joint, That BBQ Place is a British Columbia applewood smokehouse that serves their meat naked, so you can add your own sauces and really taste the smoky flavour. Affordable and authentic are the essential ingredients that make up this locally owned and operated restaurant’s success. They are passionate about their food and their clientele, and it shows.
