Meet the owner

Some establishments are instant neighbourhood classics. Such is the case for HELM Microbrasserie, which has been Bernard Avenue’s watering hole of choice since 2006. “My life partner opened the brewery. He’s a serial entrepreneur, with four businesses under his belt,” says co-owner Pétula Laliberté.

“But running a microbrewery requires a lot of presence, a lot of devotion, and he found that it took up too much of his time. I had just sold my four sushi joints at the time, I had completed a management coaching program, and I was convinced I had the energy to dedicate to the project,” Pétula explains. “I really loved the place, and I wanted to keep it in the family.”

Pétula decided to buy her partner out and to bring associates Denis Leblanc, Stéphane Pilon, Paul Brissette and Sébastien Brisson onboard HELM Microbrasserie, which has since found its stride and become a neighbourhood destination.

This Mile End microbrewery showcases Quebec products, and aims for local and responsible sourcing, whether for the grain in its house-made beer, or food ingredients for its meals. Nine beers are brewed on-site in large, stainless steel vats; also look for a few other special brews listed on their chalkboard. Brisset and Glutenberg beers are available, as well as wine, cider and liquor. Their tempting food menu includes pork schnitzel meatballs with Esplanade beer, a venison cheeseburger, and hot chicken braised in du Parc beer.
