When we say that Le Cheval Blanc is a pioneer in the art of craft beer, we mean just that. After its former incarnation as a classic ’50s tavern, it was in 1981, under the management of owner Jérôme C. Dionysius, that the establishment was gradually transformed. A few years later, in 1987, Le Cheval Blanc obtained the first craft brewer licence: #001. It was the beginning of a new era in brewing.
“Before that, there was nothing,”says current owner, Luc Senécal. Today it might be hard to imagine a Montreal without the microbreweries on every street corner. Le Cheval Blanc, however, has admirably stood the test of time without falling prey to the latest trends. A bit like a good bottle, it’s only gained value with age.
The Cheval Blanc was probably located on Ontario Street before Ontario Street existed! This artisan brewer serves you a ton of homemade products including the Admiral 70 (passion fruit), the Gose cheval de mer (cilantro and sea salt), its own pilsner, and the Double Bonheur (hops and nitrogen bubbles), plus beers from the Trou du diable and Castor breweries.
You might argue that the beer glass has replaced the Stanley Cup as trophy receptacle of choice for thirsty Montrealers. What you can’t argue is that hockey’s biggest prize is much harder to get your hands on than a tall, cold pint of craft-brewed ale or stout from one of the city’s many, thriving hop spots. The range of choices, styles and flavours has never been greater.
