Jean Lavigne likes to think of Le 9 et demi as a cross between a bed and breakfast and a youth hostel. While the term youth hostel might conjure up images of loud, cramped dorm rooms shared by half a dozen snoring strangers, this spacious, colourful guesthouse doesn’t fit that mould, offering private rooms instead for travelers who are looking for a more sequestered slumber.
Wishing to indulge your social side? Cook up a storm in the shared kitchen (a make-it-yourself breakfast is provided), grab a guitar in the living room, or relax with a cold one on the terrace. “It’s like dropping into a friend’s place but without any obligations,” explains Jean. “Like, here are the keys, make yourself at home, we’ll hook up later kind of thing. People, they appreciate that.” For the record, the use of the word "youth" here refers only to the traveler’s spirit. “We get all kinds of people here, aged 20 to 93,” says Jean.
