“I was the 341st psychologist in Quebec; nowadays, there are over 13,000 of us. Over the course of a 40-year career, I saw the field evolve, its practices change, and the boundaries between the layman and the psychologist fall – and with them, the stigma of consulting a professional,” says Karim Richard Jbeili, a psychologist who specializes in psychoanalysis.
“I studied psychology in Lyon, France, before going back to my native Lebanon to practice; this was in 1974, a year before the war broke. I had to leave the country suddenly, so I came to Canada, where I established a psychology practice, while acquiring complementary certification in psychoanalysis.”
Back in those days, the field of clinical psychology was in its infancy; few professionals practiced and few from the public sought their help. “I quickly found work in the hospital system, such as St-Jérôme and Rivière-des-Prairies," Karim relates. It wasn’t until 1992 that Karim set up his own private practice.
