Breakfast is more than your first meal of the day at Lady Marmalade. Eggs scrambled, baby kale, smashed beans, baked hash browns, cheese curds, roasted tomatoes: these are just a few listings on the menu at this savoury soul food diner in Leslieville.

Nondescript on the outside, Lady Marmalade is a throwback to old-school with a mish mash of vinyl seating, thrift store finds and avocado-coloured walls showcasing interesting local artwork. “The majority of what we’re serving is breakfast,“ says owner Natalia Simachkevitch, explaining the eclectic décor. “A lot of people say it’s like their grandmother’s kitchen.”

The vibe is sunny-side up, the food is wholesome and if it weren’t for a line-up out the door every weekend, one might only find Lady Marmalade with their nose.

Why not a little Mexican cuisine for breakfast? Lady Marmalade is the right place to get your favourite Mexican-infused breakfast dishes, all day long. Located on Queen East, the restaurant opened in 2009 and has been packed ever since. Best bets are the eggs benedict and the A.M. Poutine: baked hash browns, cheese curds with miso gravy or hollandaise.

Build your own benny any day of the week at this sunny Leslieville café. Bennies can be customized with unique toppings — like pesto, Yucatán pulled pork or brie — and are drizzled with a creamy lemony hollandaise sauce. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, try the baked bread pudding, fresh fruit crepe or check out the chalkboard menu for daily specials.
