The best food ever and the servers were amazing and fast
Very poor experience. My son (16 years old) was served under cooked liver (bloody) and was subjected to violent food poisoning as a result. Called to alert the restaurant, raise awareness and protect others, but was treated with disdain by Manager Charles. Was a loyal, weekly customer, but will not return and will not recommend to others.
I have been eating here since 1998 and it never disappoints. The only complaint I have is they water down the OJ really bad.
I don't understand the bad reviews. Second time here, Jennifer our server was more than friendly and helpful. Served drinks and left us alone to plough though an endless menu selection. Meat PLATTER could have fed two people easily. Fries came hot and good. Steak sandwich was good, and more than enough for me a larger eater. Obviously most customers are locals, and regulars, which is in my estimate the best recommendation you can get. Don't like this place, GO SOMEWHERE else and pay double and get half as much. Complaints are totally unfounded. Probably competitors or people who don't know how to order for their complicated tastes, which Fifties I am sure would accommodate if asked.
Our server was unfriendly from the beginning and was downhill... looked like she did not want to be there..I regret leaving a tip... The burger smelled and was dry, the fish and chips stank... One of the worst restaurant experiences, hopefully will not get sick... Will not be going back there 3/14/2013 If you like low quality food in large portions and bad service this place is for you. (A server other than ours was nice...)
This restaurant is known for its breakfast menu, and when one has the experience to go to Fifty’s there is no question why. They have a large sized breakfast menu ranging everywhere from cereal to larger platter breakfasts. This is the perfect family breakfast restaurant. As stated earlier they have children’s breakfast where they can get cereal- just enough for a child to be satisfied. They also have platters of breakfasts including sausages, bacon, ham, omelets, pancakes etc... perfect for an adult with a large appetite. They are probably one of the busiest places for breakfast and there is always a line outside, but considering the size of the line it moves considerably fast! They have room for large parties but also have spots for smaller parties of 2-4. While inside the restaurant there is a calm vibe with friendly servers that serve the food in a timely manner. Overall one will be impressed with their breakfast experience if they chose to go.
Was shown to a small table - okay for party of 2. Ordered the Fish and Chip special and the Rueban sandwich. Had a caesar to start - had asked for lemon with my caesar but that did not come. Waited forever to get the attention of our server - finally got her attention and she brought the lemon. Within seconds our mains arrived so did not have the salad first as I wished. Fish was heavily battered - over 50% of the portion size was batter. Fries were okay - a little soggy - undercooked and not as hot as I would have liked. On the rueban there was a very small amount of cheese and no sauce - rueban's always have sauce. Husband asked for some hot sauce with the sandwich - Tabasco was free but if he wanted Frank's that was going to be a charge of 99 cents. Sandwich was okay - he wanted a side of onion rings - was told that that could not be done. If he wanted onion rings he would have to order the $5.49 portion - no side available. I had a coffee - had to ask for a refill as server never came back. Never came back to offer to refill our water glasses - they were empty. Then when we were paying their machine automatically defaults to a tip of 15% - this server was poor and a little rude so I had to change the percentage - several step process. I had not been to 50's for a long time - before the reno - I really do not like the reno - seats for 2 are very bad - I cannot imagine how 2 men out for a businesss lunch would use them! Will not be back!
This visit to fifty's was after a long time. I must say the food and service is as consistent as i was before. It's a very good value for money that's why expect a line up but service is fast. Will keep on coming for our breakfast.
I was so upset with the food and especially the service at this place that i signed up to this site just to write my review here since the manager wouldn't take my complaint since she was part of the problem! I've been here once before a few years ago with family and we loved the chicken fingers. We went back last weekend and we were excited to have them again. My fiancé got his order first and we were surprised to see they had changed from battered to breaded and weren't at all what we expected. They were disgusting! So we called out waitress over to cancel our other orders of the chicken fingers. She gave us attitude and said she would try to cancel it. She then brought over the manager who argued with us and told us she has been working there for 7 years and has never seen the chicken fingers battered. What manager would argue with a group of 10 pating customers!?! We weren't trying to argue or fight, we even said that maybe the recipe had changed and we didn't realize, to give them the benefit of the doubt, but she refused to work with us. Later while we were looking at the menu to find something else to eat we noticed that it actually says it right on the menu that the chicken fingers are BATTERED (a big difference from breaded)! Towards the end of the meal I even caught the MANAGER looking over at our table with a look that said "morons" and she rolled her eyes at us! The hostess was rude when we told her we had 10 people to be seated. And the waitress was even worse! She just plopped the plates of food down without saying anything. They now have 10 people who will NEVER go back to their place again. Horrible service and nasty food. I would rather eat a day old greasy hamburger from McDonald's than go there!
It's always fun at 50's, you never leave hungry! I just wish they stuck to the 50's theme after they renovated, it feels more 60's now. The food is not fancy fare but it is delicious and the staff are pretty friendly, just wish the salads had fresher veggies. Overall though, I do enjoy coming here and would recomend it for someone just looking for a causal place to eat and relax.
I have been here numerous times and it has always been exactly what I expect-- awesome! They use excellent quality product at an affordable price. I have tried almost everything on the menu and have been satisfied every time. The chicken tenders and smoked meat sandwich are my absolute favorite!
Never going there again. Complained about the lack of service to the manager and got a look that said I must be crazy. No apology. Food was awful. It tasted microwaved and dry. Our server was like a ghost and we had to get up twice for napkins and condiments. They don't offer refills either. I'd be embarassed to be seen there again. Just awful awful awful .
This place has gone down hill in the last while - servers are not friendly and the food was not hot and seemed under cooked.
The food here is greasy diner stuff. Great for older folks who can't taste it and others who don't care what they eat (judging from the parade of larger folk while we dined, I'd say that's what keeps them in business). Our server was miserable and unavailable during most of our meal. The dining room was dingy despite being newly renovated. The booth we sat in had duct tape on the seat to keep it together. We weren't made to feel welcomed and never got our servers name as it was not offered. Kids had the fish. It's cod. We didn't know that until after they all refused to eat it due to the smell of "something dying around here" . I informed our server of the kids dislike for their food and she did offer to get us something else. Too bad that was more than fifteen minutes after we were served. We sent back plates full of food. There are no refills on beverages either by the way. In the end we were charged for everything, never given extra napkins when needed and were treated like a car in a drive through window. Our server didn't even smile once. Nice. I'm guessing the owners don't give a darn if you hate the food, atmosphere or service because there are always plenty more people lining up to see what is cheap on the menu. My family will not be returning and I dare say no one else should bother with this place either. This is up there with one of the worst places I've dined. EVER.
The menu reads like nothing special, but the service was great, the food was served hot and everyone enjoyed what they had ordered. The portions were generous, and the price reasonable. What more do you want when you're hungry?
This is our favorite place to eat breakfast on weekends and Friday night supper. Service is always good and food is always excellent. Servings are always Huge. We have eaten here for over 15 years.
Came with my boyfriend and another couple for dinner. I was a student at U of W. Boyfriend recently moved to Cambridge and I came to visit after work on a Friday night. It was a double date night. The line looked long when we drove by earlier, but the time we got there we waited maybe less than ten minutes. We sat in round booth. The menu is large and various of items to choose from. I had the chicken and pork souvlaki and the portion was enormous. It came with greek salad, rice, 4 skewers of meat (2 pork, 2 chicken), potatoes and tzatziki (could have offered a large portion). My dish was good, but not too much food for myself. My boyfriend has the fish and chips and he LOVED it. His portion was enormous as well. But he's a big guy and ate all of it. He kept saying "oh this is so good...you gotta try a bite". I did and it was good. They gave 2 large pieces of battered fish, a pickle wedge, tons of fries and coleslaw. He even ate some of mine. The other couple ordered steak and it was pretty rare, but that the way they liked it. I had a bite and it was tastey. Two of us had leftover boxes. The brushetta was a smaller portion, but tasted not bad. I recommend this place to students are people who large appetite. It is definitely a big bang for your buck. Looks a bit run down and shady on the outside, but the inside is a surprise. I think they renovated.
I can't saw enough about 50's! Serves is wonderful, extremely friendly, helpful and willing to do anything to make your experience wonderful. Food is good home cooking. The salads are Excellent and the meat and potatoes are great too.
Usual every other Friday Haunt for lunch, smoked meat sandwich and add another for 50 cents can't be beat. Its piled high and delicious. if you want it fatty you can ask for it to be as such! I myself have never had a problem with the service but I have heard its all in the time of day you go. Busy means you wait its just that simple. But for really good food an extra 5 min is worth it! Also try the lunch specials the cooks really do it right!
My wife and I were new to Cambridge and were looking for a restaurant that offered quality food at a reasonable price and offered a friendly and relaxing enviornment. Not only was this found the service was second to none with courteous and attentive waitt staff the evening was most pleasant. We will definately attend again and would encourage anyone who is considering a couples night out or taking the famly to dinner try the 50's and experience it for yourself.
