To the west of the main strip at Heather and 16th a unique café has taken root. The Tandem Café not only serves excellent coffee and some of the best (and best value) breakfast sandwiches around, it also doubles as a bike repair shop. Get your brakes tuned or pump your tires as you grab a bite. On the move? Pedal by their bike-only “ride-through” for your order to go.

The neighbourhood spot specializes in bicycle maintenance (a-la-carte repair services start at $9 while a complete tune up will set you back $50) and a delectable daytime menu that features coffee, tea, soups and sandwiches. The café doesn’t have a large retail section, but does stock a few bike parts and accessories. Visit often and you might even find a used bike for sale – although the reasonably priced refurbished rides are usually snapped up quickly.

Dubbed the “Brake Fast” sandwich, you have a choice here of vegetarian — spinach, tomato, egg, pesto and Havarti — or meat — ham, egg, pesto and Havarti. Or you can slam them together for a meat ‘n’ veggie-filled hearty meal. And at $4, it’s hard to go wrong. Swing by on your bike through their bike-only ride-through, or stay a while for a tune-up while you eat.
