On March 21, 1978 the Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Society of Vancouver Island was incorporated. In the ensuing years many things have happened that have helped to bring the Ukrainian community of Victoria and Vancouver Island closer together. The present Ukrainian Cultural Centre was purchased in early 1979 and with the help of many volunteers was renovated and opened later that year. We strive to promote the development of Ukrainian Canadian culture by way of annual events such as our Ukrainian Easter Traditions open house usually held on Palm Sunday. This event includes the sale of traditional Ukrainian Easter baking, demonstrations and classes in the traditional art of Pysanky or Easter Egg writing as well as displays of embroidery, costumes, art and artifacts. Another annual event is Malanka , which is the celebration of the New Year with a gala banquet and dance with performances by the Veselka Ukrainian Dancers.
