Vancouver’s second non-profit theatre, with a more contemporary edge. This is your hot spot for docs: in any given month you can take in films on subjects ranging from the environment to high fashion and many in between. You’ll also find cult faves, Canadian cinema and the best contemporary art cinema from around the globe. And you can enjoy a cold beer or some wine with your movie!
Home of the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Vancity Theatre offers a highbrow alternative to the big-budget blockbusters at your local multiplex. Moviegoers can visit this state-of-the-art cinema year-round to enjoy a civilized glass of wine in the lobby before taking in contemporary films from Canada and around the world. Reloadable gift cards can be purchased online but remember, visitors must be 19 or older and have a basic Vancity Theatre membership (a nominal $2 fee) in order to view unclassified screenings at this theatre. Premium memberships ($55 and up) include discounted movie tickets, guest privileges and a VIFF membership.
This gorgeous building on Seymour near Davie acts as both a theatre and the headquarters for the Vancouver International Film Festival. Priding themselves on bringing in some of the best in international films from festivals around the world, you can expect high quality cinema here that might otherwise never be seen by Vancouverites. Short runs mean you should check their site regularly, but it also means there’s never a shortage of excellent films on offer. Check out their series and lectures as well.
