Having already owned and operated the buffet-style New Asian Village restaurants, Harmeet Kapur and his family were looking for a new way to introduce Edmontonians to their culture and the experience of Indian fine dining. Enter Haweli. “Not only did we want to diversify, but we also wanted an a la carte restaurant to fully solidify the Indian cuisine experience,” Harmeet says. “Everything is made fresh and from scratch, we have a full drink list, and the restaurant offers the relaxing and welcoming atmosphere found in many Indian homes.”
With romantic lighting and soft colours, Haweli is a perfect downtown date destination. The inclusion of classical Indian music played with sitar and tabla every Saturday night adds an extra air of authenticity that rounds out the Indian dining experience here.

I first tried Haweli during their busy lunch buffet. Memories of many butter chicken and mango pudding-induced hazy, lazy afternoons post-feast place this East Indian restaurant firmly in my heart. Luckily, they have a small sampling of favourite dishes available for takeout, including veggie pakora (deep-fried vegetable fritters), paneer, tandoori beef ribs and their ever-popular samosas.

The food is a mix of North Indian with street food, but I like the classic recipes and the fact that it is very reasonably priced for downtown.

The butter chicken and rainbow korma are two of their specialty dishes, but they also have a huge list of tandoori dishes, cooked in a clay oven. Add some naan or roti bread (or pooda bread, made with chickpea flour, if you’re avoiding gluten) to yummy entrees such as tandoori salmon, chicken tikka or beef vindaloo.
