Finding local food may be getting easier, but finding a restaurant that feels local, that’s truly part of what makes a neighbourhood special, is rare. For Leslie McGlennon and Sarah Masters-Phillips, creating sense of community is what they do every day at Belgravia Hub, a local restaurant that’s become a fixture of the Belgravia community.

Leslie and Sarah worked together for years as chefs at a previous restaurant, so when Leslie had the opportunity to strike out on her own and open a restaurant, she knew Sarah was perfect for the job of executive chef. “Leslie lived in Belgravia when she was attending the University of Alberta. When she decided to open her own restaurant, she started looking here almost right away,” says Sarah. “She loved its location and the people who live here. It’s close to the university and the LRT, so students and locals can easily pop in for dinner.” Now, the two friends and colleagues work side-by-side every day, providing food and friendly service to the people in the area.

A hidden neighbourhood gem, Belgravia Hub’s head chef, Sarah Masters-Phillips, makes simple, satisfying and succulent comfort food. Her menu provides a fantastic array of salads and starters, but the mains are where it’s at – comfort food done well. Try the meatloaf, the bison shepherd’s pie or the jambalaya. And, the desserts are straight-up classics done right: crème brûlée, brownies, apple crisp, carrot cake and gingerbread.
